Last night we had the first rehearsal with the company of Side Show. It was the first chance for the full cast and production team to meet each other and talk about the upcoming production. Director Johnny Hebda shared some words about his vision of the show and as the cast and team introduced themselves, I was amazed at how many of them had personal connections with the story, whether through their own disabilities or the disabilities of people who are close to them.
So just what is the story? Side Show is loosely – and I do mean LOOSELY – based on the lives of Daisy and Violet Hilton, a pair of Siamese (or, as we’ve learned is more appropriate to say, conjoined) Twins that performed in the side show and vaudeville circuits of the early 20th century. The Hilton sisters were known for their beauty, their voices, their musical instrument ability and for their rather public romantic lives.
Here are just a few pictures of the famous twins.
